What can we do about mathematical learning difficulties?
- Theory-based diagnosis at the beginning of primary school
- Adaptive, supportive measures at school
What is the root of mathematical learning difficulties?
Even at the beginning of primary school, children already have a “mathematical learning history”. Their knowledge forms the basis for learning processes at school and predicts their success at school. Why is that so? Learning progress can only happen when new learning experience are connected with preexisting knowledge. If new content cannot be connected to preexisting knowledge, the new content will not solidify. Thus, children with less knowledge are falling behind right from the start.
